  • Reviving a Beloved Tradition: The Return of Hampshire’s Historic Holiday Ornaments

Reviving a Beloved Tradition: The Return of Hampshire’s Historic Holiday Ornaments

A Journey Through Time with Hampshire’s Historic Ornaments

In the quaint and historical heart of Hampshire County, a tradition once flourished, enchanting locals and visitors alike. From 1987 to 2006, the Hampshire County Historical Society commissioned and sold a series of unique Christmas ornaments, each representing a significant landmark of the area. These ornaments weren’t just decorations; they were storytellers, holding within them the rich tapestry of Hampshire’s past.

The First Twenty: A Legacy Encapsulated

The collection began with “Literary Hall” and expanded to include iconic sites like “Hook Tavern,” “Bloomery Grist Mill,” and “Hampshire County Courthouse.” Each piece was a miniature homage to the county’s diverse heritage, from the stately “Nathaniel Kuykendall House” to the quaint “Moss Rock Inn.” Accompanied by a booklet detailing the first ten ornaments, this collection became a cherished part of local Christmas traditions, weaving history and holiday spirit together.

    A Pause in Tradition

However, in 2006, the production of these ornaments ceased, leaving a void in the holiday season of Hampshire County. The memories lingered, but the tradition lay dormant, a treasure trove of local history tucked away in the attics and memory boxes of those who had collected them.

Rekindling the Spark: My Aunt Betty’s Influence

It was in 2021, inspired by my great Aunt Betty from Augusta, that the Hampshire County Convention & Visitors Bureau, in consultation with the Hampshire Historical Society, decided to revive this beloved tradition. Aunt Betty, known for her festive spirit, famously adorned each room of her house with a Christmas tree, each twinkling with lights and ornaments. Her home, a beacon of holiday cheer along Route 50, opposite Doodle’s Place, left an indelible mark on my heart.

Rediscovering an old photo of Aunt Betty’s little tree, adorned with the original twenty ornaments, reignited a passion within me. Remembering her collection, I felt a deep connection to my roots and a desire to extend this legacy.

The New Era: French’s Mill and Pin Oak Fountain

Thus, in 2022, we introduced the “French’s Mill” ornament, followed by the 2023 addition, the “Pin Oak Fountain.” These new ornaments are not just decorations; they are a bridge to our past and a beacon for our future. Crafted with care, they capture the essence of Hampshire’s enduring beauty and historical significance.

    Where to Find These Gems

These ornaments are available exclusively at Bent River Trading Company in Capon Bridge and The Country Store on Main in Romney. Priced at $15 each, they are a steal for anyone wanting to own a piece of Hampshire’s history. But hurry, as they are available in limited quantities!

    Carrying the Torch

As I look at my collection of the first twenty ornaments and the latest additions, I feel a deep sense of pride and responsibility. This isn’t just about preserving history; it’s about celebrating our community’s identity and fostering a sense of belonging. Every ornament is a story, a memory, and a piece of Hampshire that we can hold in our hands.

This holiday season, as you hang these ornaments on your tree, remember the stories they tell and the legacy they carry. Let’s keep this tradition alive, for the joy it brings today and the memories it will create for generations to come.

✨ Happy Holidays from Hampshire County! ✨

Here are six of Aunt Betty’s trees. There were many more! My daughter, Sarah Ladd, is the little girl pictured. In memory of “Aunt Bets”~June 7, 1925 – July 6, 2022.

Thanks to the generosity of Karen Piontkowski, Katie, and Andy Rogers from Direct Answer, holiday banners will soon wave along our streets, each one a testament to the caring and sharing that Capon Bridge embodies.

From Paint Parties to Holiday Garments

We also extend our appreciation to the 91 community members who brought their brushes and bright colors to our paint party. Their artwork now represents the town’s collective cheer. • U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree to Visit Romney, WV During 2023 Tour

U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree to Visit Romney, WV During 2023 Tour

Romney, WV-October 9, 2023 – Each year, a different national forest provides a tree to light up the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building for the holiday season. The Monongahela National Forest, in partnership with nonprofit partner Choose Outdoors and presenting sponsor 84 Lumber, will bring the 2023 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree from West Virginia to Washington, D.C., including a special appearance in Romney on November 14, 2023, 10:30 a.m., WV Schools for the Deaf & the Blind.

The 63-foot-tall Norway spruce will be harvested on the Monongahela National Forest in early November. The journey will include a series of outdoor community celebrations before being delivered to the U.S. Capitol on Nov. 17, where it will be decorated with handmade ornaments specially created by West Virginians.

The celebration will kick off with official remarks from Romney Mayor Beverly Keadle and Special Guest Nikki Bowman Mills. Mills, a West Virginia native, is the founder and owner of New South Media, which publishes the critically acclaimed WV Living, WV Weddings, Explore, and Morgantown magazines. In January 2015, her company also took over the editorial and design of Wonderful West Virginia magazine. She graduated from West Virginia University and received her master’s degree in Writing from DePaul University in Chicago.

The celebration during the tree’s visit to Romney on November 14 will feature a variety of activities:

    • Art for All, presented by The River House
    • Enchanting Holiday Tales with Adam Booth, Storyteller
    • Enjoy delicious hot cocoa served by the Hampshire County CEOs
    • Participate in a toy drive for the HC Sheriff’s Office
    • Contribute to a food drive to support local families in need
    • Delight in festive tunes and caroling performed by WVSDB Students, Harmony Show Choir, The Cat & The Fiddle Music School, the Hampshire High School Band & the Honeybee Community Choir.
    • Explore community booths from organizations like the Hampshire County Arts Council, Hampshire County Co-Op & Heritage Marketplace, Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad/North Pole Express, WV Youth DEP, Hampshire County Community Foundation, Hampshire County CEOs and the GFWC of Romney.

“We feel deeply privileged that the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree will be making a stop in Hampshire County on its way to Washington, D.C.,” shared Tina Ladd, Executive Director of Hampshire County CVB. “Our entire community is eagerly anticipating the chance to be a part of this national gift and the happiness it will bring to our local community this holiday season.”

This event is free and open to the public.

The tree’s journey is possible with the generous support of presenting sponsor 84 Lumber along with Kenworth Truck Company, Werner Enterprises, Hale Truck and Trailer, Spireon, WCHS ABC 8/FOX 11, Verizon Frontline, Society of American Foresters, All Crane & Equipment Rental, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Truckload Carriers Association, AHF Products, Bruce®, Armstrong Flooring™ and Robbins® flooring brands, Great West Casualty Company, Warwood Tool, LexisNexis VitalChek Network, Inc. and more.

The top priority is the safety of tour staff, event attendees, and the tree; local public health guidelines will be followed. We ask the public to be aware of the large truck’s substantial blind spots, wide turns, and longer stopping distances on our roads as they welcome the tree to their communities.

  • Eastern Building Supply – Annual Kid’s Christmas Shop 2020

With the challenges of COVID-19 and restrictions associated with it, we find it neccessary to make changes to the Eastern Building Supply Kid’s Christmas Shop.  In previous years we have had a special event where kids could come in and shop for affordable gifts for the family and friends.

This year the Christmas Shop will be set up as usual, but there will not be a one day tax free event.  The shop will open December 12th through Christmas during regular business hours.  You will be able to shop much like previous years but there won’t be a separate checkout in the Christmas Shop area.

We have gift bags for the Christmas Shop items and there are goodie bags for the kids.  We want to continue the tradtition as best as we can and hope next year will be back to normal.  We are anxious to meet the little shoppers and their families again this year.
